Autechre | Oversteps


Autechre announced their new album titled ‘Oversteps’ to be out on 22 March. The album design is aptly created by The Designers Republic which reopened in 2009. Designers Republic is a cornerstone of the global alternative culture evolving since mid-90’s and one of the design studios whose output I appreciate greatly. Their reunion with Autechre among other Warp Records artists has made the news of this album launch all the better.

Dieter Rams @Design Museum

I went to the Design Museum for an exhibition of Dieter Rams’s output which  I had mentioned earlier. It was a quite enjoyable exhibition as an evaluation and showcasing of a design approach.  The fact that Rams’s aesthetic style based on production-consumption efficiency,  originating from the differences of approaches between East and West Germany, has served as the foundation of the design philosophy behind the most expensive and elite products in today’s global market is rather insightful in picking up contemporary design approaches. I can’t help wondering how Ikea and Apple would have turned up if Rams had not been.

Canabalt, bitmek bilmeyen Galcon takıntımı dinlendirmemi sağlayan bir iphone oyunu. Oyunda, bulunduğunuz şehirdeki yıkımdan ‘koşar’ adım, mümkün olduğunca uzağa kaçmaya çalışıyorsunuz. Oyun muhteşem müziği ve grafik dizaynı ile bana biraz Another World ve Flashback‘li günlerimi hatırlattı ve kendisini daha da çok sevdirdi. Zaman kaybetmeyi sevenler için.

Polaroid SX-70

‘Mid-Century Design”dan bahsetmişken Polaroid fotoğraf makinelerini anmadan olmaz. Amerikan ‘consumerism‘ kültürünü dizayn yaklaşımları ile şekillendirmiş en önemli isimlerden Charles ve Ray Eames‘in Polaroid’leri tanıttıkları bu videoda, basitçe insanları yeni bir tüketim alanı olacak olan ‘fotoğraf’ ile tanıştırıyorlar.

Bu filmi izlerken garip bir biçimde insanların ekonomik sınıf tanımlarının teknoloji tüketimi ile şekillendirilmeye başlandığı ilk ‘an”ı görür gibi oldum. Sanki bir gün Ray Kurzweil‘ın Singularity’si gerçekleşirse, karanlık bir delikte bu film de aklıma gelecek.

Akira‘nın animasyon ekibinden olan Tatsuyuki, kirli – sıvılı meka transformasyon, siber biyonik ve tekinsiz çocukların hakim olduğu distopik vizyonunu pek beğendiğim bir çizer. Şimdilerde kendisi ‘Superflat’ akımının en önemli icracısı Studio 4C‘de çalışıyor ki birlikte çalıştığı ekip bu akımla tüm anime-manga kültürünü değiştiren insanlardan oluşuyor. İçeriğinde güzel ’superflat’ örnekleri de bulunan, Tatsuyuki’nin seçme işlerini topladığı, ‘Cannabis Works Art Book”u Ideetrope Siberdepo’dan indirelim. —>

Bugüne kadar yapılmış en iyi bilimkurgu filmi olduğunu düşündüğüm Blade Runner’ın görsel tasarımları, Tron’un kült siberaracı, Aliens’ın Sulaco’su vs. gibi muhteşem futurist yaklaşımları geliştiren kişi, Syd Mead. Genellikle işlerindeki futurizm algısı, tasarımlarındaki olabilirlik olasılığının yaşatttığı tekinsizlik hissi ile tanımlanabilir. Bu da hikayelerde pek konforlu bir inandırıcılık etkisi yaratıyor. Biraz kendisini kurcaladıktan sonra Blade Runner ve Tron’u tekrar izlemek güzel olur.
